Adaptive Equipment for Children

Special equipments are available which will help them to get around or do everyday activities.

A wheelchair is sometimes used when a child with cerebral palsy cannot walk. If he has good hand function then he will be able to roll the wheels himself. Otherwise motorized wheelchairs should be used. This will allow the child to move from one place to another.

Some children with cerebral palsy can walk, but have poor balance and may fall. They use a walker to help them balance and get around without the use of a wheelchair. Elbow crutches and tripod stick are other alternatives in those children who have better function.

A common problem in these children is brushing their teeth or holding spoons. In such cases special handles or grip are available. Shirts with Velcro straps instead of buttons can be used to dress themselves.

For better communication a book with pictures can be used to show things that the child might want. With the advent of computers things may become simpler over a period of time.
